EDUCATION & TRAINING Goal: Increase accessibility and appropriateness of training to all Enterprise Community residents .Current Conditions: 76% of Immokalee residents and 43% of the Eastern Hendry County residents over the age of 25, do not have a high school diploma or GED. 42% of the high school body in Immokalee and 52% of the high school body in Hendry County does not graduate within four years. Objectives: Expand Educational and Self-Sufficiency Skills Expand Vocational and Job Training Opportunities Provide Better Access to Services Summer Youth Employment Program: The Empowerment Alliance employed 36 youth in 2004 to work at non-profits and government organizations in Immokalee over the summer. The program included several training sessions on employability skills, budgeting and savings, and career opportunities. The program filled a critical need for job opportunities for youth and had a waiting list of 85 students. The Empowerment Alliance will continue the program in 2005 and is seeking additional funds to increase the number of students. Expanded Vocational Opportunities: The Empowerment Alliance, through their Immokalee Education and Training Subcommittee, has worked diligently to increase the number vocational programs offered at the Bethune Education Center and to fully utilize the Immokalee High School facilities for adult vocational education. These efforts have resulted in the following courses being offered in Immokalee: Licensed Practical Nursing, Certified Nursing Assistant, Computer Applications.
A trades program was also developed at Bethune Education Center through contributions of local contractors and community partners including the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board. The first class graduated in December 2004. Vocational Scholarship Program:In 2004, the Empowerment Alliance awarded scholarships to 37 students to fll the financial gaps to assure students complete their vocational training by covering such expenses as books, uniforms, tuition, and lab fees. The Education Center of Southwest Florida The Empowerment Alliance helped secure USDA financing to construct the Education Center of Southwest Florida just south of LaBelle. The facility will open in 2006 and will offer a wide range of vocational programs. Books for the Harlem Library The Empowerment Alliance secured grants to provide books to the Harlem Library. EmpowerKids Tutoring Program The Empowerment Alliance provides after school, one-on-one tutoring for children from eastern Hendry County. Approximately 100 children have been served.
