CHINESE NEW YEAR

Welcome to the Year of the Black Horse

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.

Task
This web quest is designed to help you celebrate the Chinese New Year.  Choose 3 or more tasks from those listed below.

Your first task is to make a scrapbook.  Include in this scrapbook pictures, drawings and information that portrays the following topics:
    Foods
    Decorations
    Superstitions
    Calendar
    Chinese Zodiac
Story for the animal of the year
    Contributions or inventions

Your second task will be a letter that you would write to Shirley Temple Wong, the heroine of In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson and explain to her about how baseball is played in Collier County.  Send this letter to Mrs. Camp by e-mail.

Your third task is to create a time line of the life of Jackie Robinson.

Your last task is to compare and contrast Shirley Temple Wong, Jackie Robinson and a current major league baseball player of your choice.

Conclusion

Awareness of the celebrations by other cultures reflects the concept of diversity.  Do you feel that having more than one calendar is confusing?  Support your answer.

If you had the opportunity to rename the years for the Chinese, what names would you give them and why?

Which of the many New Year's traditions kept by the Chinese do you feel will be celebrated 100 years from now?  Explain.

Name some of the contributions that Shirley Temple Wong could bring to our class. Explain.
